L-Systems & Fractal Trees

L-systems and fractal trees

Rule 1 – wherever there is an open end of a line, another line can be drawn at right angles to the existing line. Rule 2 – the new line is placed so that its mid-point coincides with the open end. Rule 3 – the new line is also shorter by a scale factor of the original line.

My first experiments, done at a desk with a ruler and calculator, were similar to the set of production rules of the L-system. This act of self-similar repetition is a precursor to the fractal tree. I have continued to be interested in generating systems-based images but now use vector-based software and programming.
